Six Sketch Walk events this September, open to all
Heritage Open Days allows everyone to see inside familiar but often little-known buildings. This year, we are exploring these buildings a little closer by drawing them.
By looking closely at the architectural detailing on buildings, you can gain a fuller understanding and appreciation of their artistry.
Our sketch walk artists are drawn from urban sketchers and professional and casual artists who all have an interest in and love of Newcastle’s heritage. They will take you on a journey and provide help, support, and materials for you to create your own sketched observations of the buildings open during the Heritage Open Days weekend.
What to expect
You will be provided with a small “chapbook,” a traditional format with a rich history. Originating in 16th-century Europe, chapbooks were sold by peddlers known as chapmen. These compact publications were often filled with popular literature, folk tales, religious tracts, or political pamphlets.
On our sketch walks, you’ll use them to capture your observations and stories about the buildings you visit.
After the visit, you are invited to the Creative Central Hub in the Grainger Market, where you can finish your booklet using watercolour paint. On completion your chapbooks will be scanned and displayed in the Grainger Market.
This is an excellent opportunity for artists and non-artists to capture some great stories of our local heritage assets.
How to book
Six sketch walks will take place during the Heritage Open Days period this year. We have two walks daily from Friday 13 September to Sunday 15 September 2024.
They are free, and places are limited to 12 people per walk.
