Jed Buttress in the studio photographed by Bex Masters

We’re pleased to announce that artist Jed Buttress has been selected for the Grainger Market Wayfinding commission as part of an open call announced earlier this year.

This £30,000 public art project will see the creation of ceiling-hung installations to help visitors navigate the historic Grainger Market. Due for completion in Spring 2026, the commission will celebrate the market’s unique character while supporting its transformation as a key cultural and visitor destination.

Jed Buttress is an award-winning investigative artist whose practice spans sculpture, installation and digital media. His work often combines science, history and community collaboration, with a distinctive sense of humour. He has exhibited nationally and shown work alongside artists such as Antony Gormley and Lubaina Himid.

As part of Creative Central NCL, Jed has previously been commissioned by Forth Lane Urban Gallery, where he created a 3D wall mural inspired by Newcastle’s historic carvings. He also curated the Brass Tacks programme at Newcastle Arts Centre – part of Creative Central NCL’s Skills & Business Pilot Scheme – supporting local artists to exhibit and develop new work.

We’ll share more details about the wayfinding commission as the project develops.
