[closed] Forth Lane Urban Gallery Creative Lighting Call Out

Fee

£6,000

Deadline

30 June 2025

Open To

Artists, designers and creatives

What is it?

This is an open call for a feature light installation to illuminate the Forth Lane archway in Newcastle City Centre.

The selected designer will create a visually striking and durable lighting piece that enhances public safety, complements the existing Forth Lane Urban Gallery, and responds to the theme ‘Pleasure Garden’—part of the city’s wider ‘Hidden City’ public art programme. Read about the Forth Lane Urban Gallery here.

The total commission value is £6,000. This commission forms part of the ongoing investment in central Newcastle through the Creative Central NCL programme.

Who is it for?

This opportunity is open to artists and designers interested in showcasing work in a unique urban location in the heart of Newcastle.

We welcome applications from creatives across the UK but are especially interested in artists and organisations based in or with strong links to the North of Tyne area, including Newcastle, Northumberland, and North Tyneside.

Applicants must be able to complete the work between Autumn 2025 and February 2026 (final dates to be agreed with the selected designer).

What are the non-negotiable criteria?

All submitted ideas must:

  • Be original designs responding to the unique geometry and location of the Forth Lane archway
  • Consider the existing Forth Lane Urban Gallery and the overarching theme ‘Pleasure Garden’
  • Include a maintenance plan and details on material
  • Be robust and vandal-resistant, while still allowing for easy maintenance and bulb replacement
  • Be positioned high within the archway to maximise visibility and safety
