What is it?
This is an open call for a large-scale wayfinding art commission within the historic Grainger Market in Newcastle.
The project aims to create visually impactful, ceiling-hung installations that will assist visitors in navigating the market’s alleys and junctions.
With a total commission value of £30,000, this opportunity seeks to highlight Grainger Market’s architectural and cultural significance while reinforcing its position as a key visitor destination.
An additional £1,000 development fee will be provided to two shortlisted artists to further refine their ideas before the final decision is made.
Who is it for?
This opportunity is open to artists and creatives, particularly those based in the North of Tyne area (including Newcastle, Northumberland, and North Tyneside).
Artists must be available for the second stage of the selection process, taking place from 23 June to 4 July 2025, and must complete the artwork by Spring 2026.
What are the non-negotiable criteria?
- All submitted ideas must be original and specifically respond to the Grainger Market’s wayfinding needs.
- Artwork must be hung from the ceiling and situated within the market alleys, particularly at junctions with cross-alleys.
- Consideration must be given to the existing and planned signage and lighting within the market.
- Each piece must not exceed 20kg in weight.
- Artists are encouraged to consult with traders to ensure the artwork complements the market environment and does not obstruct market operations. Creative Central NCL can facilitate these consultations.
