This commission has been awarded, find out about the commissioned artist here.

What is it?

We’re inviting visual artists to apply for a new small-scale mural commission in the heart of Newcastle city centre, as part of Creative Central NCL’s public art and wayfinding trail through Pink Lane.

This commission is part of our growing series of creative interventions helping shape the area into a cultural corridor, connecting people to nearby creative spaces through street-level artwork.

This open call invites artists to design and hand-paint three small murals directly onto ground level frames within shop facades and on an old post box on Pink Lane, as shown below.

Who is it for?

This opportunity is open to visual artists who want to create and display their small-scale artwork outside in central Newcastle.

We welcome applications from creatives across the UK but are especially interested in artists and organisations based in or with strong links to the North of Tyne area, including Newcastle, Northumberland, and North Tyneside.

Applicants must be able to complete the work in Autumn 2025.

What are the non-negotiable criteria?

All submitted ideas must:

  • Be original designs responding to the guidelines
  • Be playful and unique
  • Consider and respond to the creative and cultural venues nearby (see the guidelines for more info)
  • Be able to be hand-painted directly onto the surfaces
  • Be able to be complete by Autumn 2025
