In partnership with GIFT: Gateshead International Festival of Theatre, we present Performance and its Audiences – reimagining the relationship.
Join us at The Common Room with Kate Craddock and Helen Freshwater to celebrate their recent publication, Theatre and its Audiences: Reimagining the Relationship in Times of Crisis (Bloomsbury 2024), for a conversation about the shifting nature of audience experience in times of change and crisis.
Taking some of the key ideas raised in their book as a springboard for conversation, this event will be an opportunity to share perspectives and insights from across sectors.
Following the book launch and discussion, we present a performance of A Citizens’ Assembly by Andy Smith.

Be part of the story and join the debate with A Citizens’ Assembly, a new work by acclaimed theatre maker Andy Smith created in collaboration with applied arts practitioner Lynsey O’Sullivan. Part of a series of works called Plays For The People: plays written to be performed by the people in the room.

Kate Craddock is the Founder and Festival Director of GIFT: Gateshead International Festival of Theatre.
Helen Freshwater is Reader in Theatre and Performance at Newcastle University.
Andy Smith is a theatremaker based in Lancaster, and Lecturer in Theatre Practice at the University of Manchester.
